Your comments on the new sonic bird detection system are interesting. I've recently read about at least two flights that had to return to the airport because they hit flocks of birds. Unlike many people, I have a serious concern for the birds as well as the people involved in these collisions.

Granted that the purpose of the detection system is to increase human safety and save money, and that small "harmless" birds will be ignored, don't you think that it will still result in a net reduction of bird deaths? (Those small birds are going to perish with or without the system, right?)
